September eNews: Summer is ending, but the fun isn’t!
Dear Friends,
With September comes the end of summer--kids and caregivers settling into new school routines; getting in a final camping trip or visit with extended family; and finding new ways to stay active and safe outdoors as the days get shorter. Fortunately, living in the Bay Area gifts us the unique benefit of being surrounded by a broad diversity of natural spaces that remain accessible year-round. So even though the summer is ending, our exploration and enjoyment of the outdoors doesn't have to end with it.
Here at YES, our team is hard at work planning outdoor programs that will inspire participants to reclaim their connection to the earth and cultivate their leadership. We're proud to work with many organizations that help make this possible, but when it comes to the land closest to the YES community, our East Bay Regional Parks stand out. Whether it's an afternoon spent at Miller Knox Shoreline or a weekend hike in Wildcat Canyon, our friends from EBRPD always make sure that YES families and youth have the space and the knowledge they need to explore, learn, and lead.
While we’re filling our calendars with fall and winter plans in our East Bay parks, we’re also taking time to be grateful for the moments of connection and joy this summer has brought us. Read on for our favorite moments of 2021 Family Camp and see why we’ve chosen its home, the Pescadero Creek Park, as one of our favorite year-round destinations for the whole family to explore.
As much as we appreciate the spaces around us, they wouldn’t mean nearly as much without a wonderful community to share in our experiences. We’re so grateful to have you by our side--all year long.
Warmly,
Eric Aaholm, Executive Director
YES Community Highlight: East Bay Regional Park District
You’ve probably walked along a trail marked with East Bay Regional Park District’s signature leaf logo, but perhaps you didn’t know that this organization plays a vital role in YES’s youth programs. Through the Richmond Rangers program, C2C backpacking trip, Camp Days, Nature Day Outings, Family Camp, and material support, EBRPD has worked with YES for over a decade to share not only their nature-know-how, but also social-emotional skills and community leadership with YES families.
So, say “hello” to one of EBRPD’s friendly staff members at the next Nature Day Outing and get expert tips and recommendations for your next East Bay adventure.
The Impact of Family Camp
The summer is packed with activities with our YES families, but none stand out quite like Family Camp. Check out this conversation between Eric and Family Camp alumni Maria, Gloria, and Laura to hear what keeps their families coming back, year after year... for 16 years!

Parks We Love: Pescadero Creek Park
When you pull into the parking lot at Pescadero Creek Park, you’re going to have a hard time believing you drove just ninety minutes to get here from Richmond. Occupying the land of the native Ohlone people--the Quiroste tribe, more specifically--the park is now home to YMCA Camp Loma Mar which has hosted YES Summer and Family Camps for over two decades.
The slowness and the peaceful quiet conjured up by the towering redwoods and meandering creeks may feel a bit eerie, at first; but we love how the unhurried pace and natural sounds create an environment that’s perfect for deepening connections--to yourself, to the ones you’re with, and to the land.
Hiking trails winding through the trees and waterways range from just one mile to all-day excursions, so the whole family will be able to find their own piece of Pescadero Creek Park to love. The land is home to numerous endangered species of trees, fish, and other critters, so be sure to follow all posted rules and regulations and do your part to keep this wild land special. Follow the link below to find a map of the park and plan a day, or weekend, in Pescadero Creek Park that’s just right for you.
